The B.A. in East Asian Studies-Chinese track is a degree for students who want to expand their scope of knowledge to comprehend a modern language that lives through 3000 years. Currently, Chinese program offers six-semester long Mandarin courses, including the beginning, intermediate and advanced levels, which integrate training in listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. “Intermediate Chinese Conversation” and the capstone course “Advanced Reading in Chinese” will be offered every other semester. Through a rigorous training of both spoken and written Chinese, students are expected to be able to communicate with Chinese native speakers, to understand its culture and society in various aspects, as well as to read general topics written in Chinese.
Chinese program also offers cultural courses such as “Introduction to China”, “ China on Screen”. Taught in English, these 300 level courses of Chinese literature, film, and culture are also available for a general student body of UNM. For students who want to advance Chinese with a cultural immersion experience, the UNM-Sichuan University exchange program is a valuable opportunity. Supported by the Department, Chinese program continues growing steadily and considerably. Today UNM students can choose to major or minor in Chinese. We hope that through learning Chinese language and culture, our students will get an advantageous position to comprehend a globalizing world confidently and to start their career with competitive edge.
