Peng Yu has been teaching Chinese as a second language since 2010. In his Chinese language classes, Peng adopts a student-centered approach in which students are given plenty of opportunities to actually communicate in Chinese meaningfully. He is passionate about teaching language and culture, and he is willing to work with all students who are enthusiastic about learning Chinese language and culture. Students often appreciate his energetic teaching style as well as great patience.
Before joining UNM, Peng taught a good variety of undergraduate Chinese language courses in the College of William and Mary (Williamsburg, VA), including regular beginning level to upper-intermediate level classes, Chinese for heritage speakers, summer intensive classes, and beginning business Chinese (for alumni). Peng also taught Chinese classes at all levels including AP Chinese with Virtual Virginia, a fully online course program provided by the Virginia Department of Education.
Peng’s postgraduate studies focused on curriculum and instructions in foreign languages with a special concentration on Chinese language education.
Peng's teaching and research interests focus on teaching Chinese as a second language, including the following aspects:
- Chinese phonetic pedagogy
- Chinese grammar pedagogy
- Chinese behavioral culture
- Task-based language learning
